Military SF is a genre within a genre. It’s an area of Science Fiction which specialises in the military of the future in terms of settings, characters, motivations, technologies and behaviours. It is often an extrapolation of current or recent armed forces, usually naval, and is based quite heavily on actual combat and tactics.

It is commonly bloody, violent, anarchic, rapid and intense.

Note that for Military SF it is not usually sufficient to include fleets of ships or legions of troops; it is expected that the story will deal heavily with motivations and outcomes on a personal or small group scale, whether the larger context of the conflict is discussed or not. It’s about honour, sacrifice, duty and personal codes.

My work in progress is currently Military SF. As with any ongoing writing, the emphasis may yet change as the story and characters progress.

Incidentally, I own the domain name MilitarySF.com and whilst I intend to use it for my own works I could be ‘persuaded’ otherwise (financially, if you get my drift).
